The teaching qualification and what it does not cover

A foundation, sold and read as a completion.

The standard teaching credential in this sector provides an introduction to planning, delivery and assessment. It is a reasonable foundation and it is routinely treated as the whole preparation, after which no further teaching development is expected or funded.

The areas it covers thinly are the ones that cause difficulty: managing a group with a wide range of prior education, teaching learners with low language or literacy in the language of instruction, recognising when a learner has an unidentified need, and making judgement calls at the assessment margin.

Those are exactly the situations a trainer in this sector encounters constantly, and encountering them without preparation produces either avoidance or improvisation, both of which fall hardest on the learners least equipped to compensate.

The practical response inside a provider is targeted rather than general: short sessions on the specific recurring difficulty, delivered by somebody in the department who handles it well. That is cheap and it is more useful than an external course on teaching in general.

It is also worth being honest in recruitment about what the qualification represents. A new trainer who believes they are fully prepared, and is not, will conclude that their difficulty is personal rather than structural.
